SMM January 9 News:

This week, the sodium-ion battery market exhibited a relatively stable trend. As the Chinese New Year approaches, market trading activities have slowed down, but this does not hinder the industry's optimistic outlook for the future development of sodium-ion batteries. Currently, the market's focus is primarily on the application potential of sodium-ion batteries in areas such as two-wheelers, start-stop power supplies, and ESS.

From a technical perspective, sodium-ion batteries outperform lithium batteries in terms of C-rate performance and performance in low-temperature environments, providing strong support for their future applications in specific fields. However, as an emerging technology, sodium-ion batteries still require time for further development and refinement.

Notably, it is expected that by 2025, with the gradual commissioning of production lines for sodium-ion battery anode and cathode materials, battery cells, and other supporting facilities, effective mass production could significantly reduce the cost of sodium-ion batteries. This will not only enhance their competitiveness but also better meet the market's demand for efficient and low-cost energy solutions.

SMM believes that although the sodium-ion battery market remains calm in the short term due to factors such as the Chinese New Year, its medium and long-term development prospects remain promising. Market participants are awaiting new opportunities after the holiday, expecting sodium-ion batteries to secure a place in the future energy sector.

Sungrow: The Global Energy Storage Market Is Expected to Grow by 30–50 in 2026
At a conference call on March 31, Sungrow stated regarding the company’s overall target plan for energy storage shipments in 2026 that the global market is expected to grow by 30–50 in 2026. With raw material prices rising, some projects were in a wait-and-see stage, but the demand should still exist and would only be deferred. The company will strive based on the upper end of market growth, hoping to achieve more than 60 Gwh.

Tozero Launches Industrial Demo Plant to Recover Lithium from Waste Batteries
German company, Tozero, announced on March 27 (local time) the official launch of its industrial-scale demonstration plant. The company has built a facility at the Gendorf chemical park in Bavaria, Germany, capable of processing more than 1,500 tons of waste batteries annually. The process enables the recovery of lithium carbonate, graphite, and nickel-cobalt mixtures from spent batteries for reuse as battery raw materials. The plant is expected to recycle resources equivalent to batteries from approximately 6,000 electric vehicles per year, reducing reliance on landfill disposal.
